I’m realizing that I am getting fatter as I sit on my ass all day in a cubicle. So how does Oppo stay in shape?

Running, along with dieting is your best bet. Definitely cut out things like soft drinks completely from your diet.

That’s a good idea. I guess I should consider joining a gym. It’s hard being motivated to go though :(
![]() 09/28/2015 at 23:48 |

Full body every workout. I do Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday.
35% Cardio (21 min of 60)
25% Upper Body (15 min of 60)
25% Lower Body and Back (15 min of 60)
15% Flexibility and Core (9 min of 60)
Details just depend on you, but that’s my rubric and I try to do a different exercise every other workout. I do two days in a row so that Friday is a kind of warm up for a rough Saturday, rest two days then beat Saturday on Tuesday. Obviously the days don’t matter, just the 1-1-0-0-1-0-0 repeat.

Tell me about it. It takes me an hour to get to work and another hour to get home. When there isn’t traffic the same route takes 25 minutes. Ridiculous.

Workout when you’re not in a cubical. I too took a desk job earlier this year and understand the effects of cubical work. It sucks, but waking up early to exercise, working out during a lunch break, or doing some physical activity after work is crucial to staying healthy. Considering that at least eight hours of the day are spent in a chair, it’s imperative to force yourself to conduct some sort of exercise, even when you don’t want to. Your body will thank you and you will feel healthier overall. Living a lethargic life will only perpetuate itself, so get off your ass and do something. Besides, nobody likes looking at jiggle-tits in the mirror before you shower; unless you’re not a male, I suppose.

Its the hardest thing to start going to the gym after the first few times.. but after that you get into a rhythm and then it becomes absolutely addicting.

Walking. Lots of freakin walking.

Thankfully I have never had a commute that involved “The 405” or one of those other roads that are notoriously clogged. It’s been subways, or a commute in from a suburb to another suburb.

Honestly I just go run or workout during lunch. I get to work early and leave late so I can afford to take slightly longer lunches to let me do a full workout.
Running after work is also an amazing way to stay in shape, even just 30 mins a day

Okay, that makes sense. I like to jog and also took a weight lifting class during college and really liked those activities so I’m thinking that’s probably the way to go for me. Do you mind my asking what you do for each of those segments you listed?

Oh god. Hearing “the 405” just brings back horrible flashbacks of my summer trip down to LA. The reputation is well earned. The roads are just horrendous. Whoever decided to use that concrete-like surface instead of asphalt AND make it undulate deserves a special spot after their doom.

My bare minimum is 6 miles of walking every day. (Yes, tracked with a FitBit.) I prefer to get 10+. I also do things like park as far away as is reasonable from a destination when driving, choosing to walk to lunch when appropriate, and little things like that. It adds up. I also try not to snack too much throughout the day and I do everything possible to not eat fast food. However, that said, sometimes there literally are no other food options when filming in the middle of nowhere.

No wonder the rich use helicopters. There was a $95 special here during the Pope’s visit - east to west, or west to east, if you could get a seat. I almost did it just to say I’d done it.

I always walk to class in campus instead of taking the bus, I lift 4 days a week, and do cardio for the other 3. I also try to eat healthy, but alas on campus food is not good for you. Plus being in R.O.T.C helps.....

I had the build for it when I was in HS because I played lacrosse for varsity for 2 years and JV 2 years and we had the same workouts no matter what. But ya, cleaning a theater that sells out @122 people carrying a tub of liquids, silverware, and cups works you good

Honestly I would just look up work outs for each body group. Find three for each group and do one per session. If you find you complete exercises before the time is finished either change the reps or add an exercise on that group. No matter what you do, just do it with focus and you’ll be better for it.

I’m on a large college campus with no car, so I walk a lot...
The gym here is always crowded as hell, so I usually don't go, and instead do whatever I can with the lone pair of 30lbs dumbbells I have at the apartment.

I’ve lost 40 lbs in the past 6 months or so. I was pretty fat and out of shape, and signed up for a couples gym membership with my gf. I’ve ended up using it way more than her.
I eat a pretty strict diet, with some occasional splurges on unhealthy items, but really try to keep an eye on my daily intake. I try to keep it around 1600-1700 calories because aside from my workouts I’m at a desk all day.
I go to the gym 5-6 days a week for about an hour and change. 30-35 minutes on the elliptical and I try to periodically raise the resistance level. Then I do a bunch of weights in however long it takes me to finish my routine, usually anther 35 mins or so. Stretch before and after and make sure to drink plenty of water.
I’m a night owl so I typically go to the gym around 8:30-10 pm. Instead of a big dinner I’ll do mini meals before and after my workout. I have a regular dinner on non-gym nights.
If you haven’t exercised regularly in a long time, start out easy. You can always increase the difficulty later. Even if you’ve been doing one thing for a while, be careful starting new activities. The first time I tried actual running after several months of the elliptical, I was sore for like 4 days afterward. But after that first terrible soreness with each new activity, my recovery time got way better.

Haha your posts are very informative. I’m not sure if you remember but you replied to one of my posts earlier this year and gave me a template for a cover letter. I actually used it and it worked. So thank you for that!
That’s a good plan though. I think I’m going to get my body reacquainted to exercise by jogging a little every day and then look into gyms. I have a treadmill at home but no weights.

get a bike man! If you put in the work and don’t coast everywhere it’s makes for great cardio and on top of that it is low impact on the knees.

I had the exact same problem. I started running after I get home. Originally I’d be pushing myself to go further and further, but that got really hard which made me stop doing it.
Now I just try to run every single night, not trying to push myself too hard. It means I can cut back the distance if I’m feeling lazy or I’ve got things to do. But usually I find, once I’m out there I want to keep going.
I’m also listening to the Game of Thrones audio books which I’ve never had time to do.
It’s only been a week and a half, can’t report the long term effects yet. But I’m keeping it up so I think I’ve nailed part of the equation.

If you want to focus on losing weight, you’ll want to look at your diet in addition to working out. A dietician (not a nutritionist, two very different things) can help if you don’t know where to start or if you find that what you’re trying isn’t working or if you have additional health concerns. Also, see if you can get an adjustable desk so you can sit/stand as much as you want during the day.
Personally I lift 3-4 times a week.

I’ve been following the Rock’s workout program lately. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/train-like…
http://www.bodybuilding.com/ has tons of workouts, articles on training and nutrition/diet, and you can buy supplements and gear from them. There’s a forum too. They also have the BodySpace app where you can track workouts and whole exercise programs on your phone.

Soccer or Frisbee during my lunch time instead of going out to lunch (I just eat a packed lunch later on while working), lift weights after work two nights a week, hiking or mountain biking on most weekends (spring-fall), skiing on most weekends (winter), and making all of my meals at home. I truly need 3000-4000 calories per day just to keep up with it all. I try to avoid high salt and high sugar foods/drinks always. Metabolism certainly helps with all of this as well.

Hey, glad I can help out!
It’s totally fine to start out just doing cardio, building up your endurance, and then adding weights to the mix. I lost a whole bunch of weight doing nothing but eating right and a lot of running on the elliptical.
Since you have a treadmill, you might want to start out on the treadmill instead of jogging outside. The treadmill at least has some bounce to it so it’ll be lower impact and less likely to make you sore when you’re starting up.
I’m no expert in any of this stuff, but one of the trainers at my gym gave me a good basic full-body strength routine. I keep that in an evernote and keep trying to up the weights for each exercise. So if I’ve been doing say 70 lbs on the tricep curls and successfully up the weight to 75 lbs I change the number on my phone.
Other people are more obsessive about tracking their individual workouts and there’s more detailed apps out there, but I just use my note as a reference guide.

I run 3-6 miles a day 3-4x a week usually in the summer. In the winter I tend to do Insanity or TapOut XT, just finished TapOut for the 3rd time.
